Vision, Purpose and Assignments

You haven’t heard from me in a while if you’ve been following Financial Grace for a while unless you listen to the radio show or podcast you’ll hear from me every week. Why is that you might wonder? Or why would you care?

Because we are all on a journey in life and God says he’ll lead us on the straight path, but that’s not always the path we thought it would be (Proverbs 3:6).

Goals are something we are likely all familiar with. You set a desired intention and design an activity plan to reach an end result by a certain time.

Vision is what you’re after when you set a goal. There’s a desired result you envision when the goal is accomplished.

Purpose is the motivation that empowers you towards the vision and taking the steps necessary to set and reach the goals along the way.

Assignment is your current situation. It’s the tasks you’re required to do in the moment.  Sometimes your assignment is simple and easily identifiable, and other times, it’s more detailed and involves many moving pieces.

The reason you haven’t heard from me in a while is because God has given me an assignment above and beyond the current tasks towards the realization of goals, leading towards the vision He’s given me for the purpose for which He has called me.

Life does this to all of us on a regular basis. You start with unctions in your spirit; these begin to form a vision; the vision will direct you towards steps that are the goals necessary to realize the vision. The reason you pursue any of this is because God has given each of us desires in our heart that guide us to fulfilling His purposes for our life (Psalm 20:4).

This might sound straightforward enough, but when you recognize that the realization of any kind of goal begins where you are, you will understand the importance of ‘assignments’.

Day-to-day assignments are the tasks of your current life.  These can be work, family or general maintenance of life like eating, cleaning, travelling, bill-paying and maintaining your life.

Bigger assignments will come as you take steps towards your God-inspired vision. Some of these will be your own undertaking as you follow the Holy Spirit leading you to fulfill His purposes through and for your life. Other bigger assignments will come as part of life, or through something that doesn’t have an immediate explanation for the timing or circumstances.

Life assignments can often show up as medical or family issues. You might set a goal and made plans to realize the goal as part of your bigger vision and overall purpose, but something happens outside of your control that pulls you from your original plans and becomes your assignment in that moment. This diversion doesn’t necessarily have to be for some sort of crisis like many people will immediately assume.

A special celebration or opportunity can divert you from your original plans which is why it’s important to pay attention to where God is assigning you at any moment because any guilt or condemnation about what you think you ‘should’ or ‘should not’ be doing will cause you to miss God’s hand in your life.

Sometimes, however, you can be going in a particular direction, taking steps towards realizing goals that are leading you towards fulfilling a vision, when you’ll find yourself immersed in something you hadn’t expected.

Imagine you’re working towards a promotion at work and have been taking classes to upgrade your skills. During your studies you connect with some other students and co-workers and share your knowledge with people around you. One day, seemingly out of the blue, you’re offered a position somewhere else and the next thing you know, you find yourself maybe moving and working in a similar, but different and better role.

When you pursue God’s purposes for your life and take steps towards realizing a vision He gives you, you will find He will bring you assignments that aren’t always what you initially anticipated.  This is life, and this is the way God leads his people when they surrender their ways to His ways.

The reason I’ve been somewhat quiet online isn’t because the goals, vision or purpose for my life has changed, but because God has brought me 2 significant assignments.  One is a very detailed personal client situation, drawing on many areas of my expertise and experience. The other is an alignment with a Christian Financial Services Organization. I have been praying for many years for alignment with a Christian ministry or church organization and instead God lead me very gently to a financial services company whose mission and values align with those He has developed in me over the years. More about this later…

Maybe all this leaves you with a big, ‘so what?’

Well, if you’ve been following the financial grace journey, or if just heard the message, you’ll learn that along with the assignments and alignment, God has brought me some help with online communications which is also an answer to a long-standing prayer. This means the seeds that have been planted and tended by me alone in product and program development and in online infrastructure and training, are growing.

In finance, more than anything else that impacts our life so dramatically, I know from experience and from talking with people from every age and background, that there is always a sense of needing to control the financial circumstances of life. This means we want to see what our financial decisions are going to return to us. We expect that if we exchange some kind of payment for a good or service we’ll see some benefit from that transaction.

But when God moves in your life through finances, the circumstances aren’t always going to make sense in the moment or be able to be measured by natural means. Consider the feeding of the multitudes, the widows jars overflowing, the coin in the mouth of a fish, the net breaking with fish after a previous low catch, and more…

God has good plans for each of our lives (Jeremiah29:11) and He promises to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians3:20). He also tells us that His blessings come without painful toil (Proverbs 10:22) and that we can come to Him when we are burdened, and He will give us rest (Matthew 11:28).

Are you resting in His good plans and provision today by attending to the assignment(s) He brings you – all of them – as though working for Him (Col 3:23)?

When life comes, with opportunities or emergencies, you want to heed God’s direction without letting the rest of life collapse around you. This is why financial systems for the day-to-day management and reporting of money in and out of your life are essential to set up NOW!

In my life’s journey, I know with everything in me that God’s hand was in the chaos, but the systems my husband and I had in place when the major assignment struck like lightning, enabled us to grow stronger in our relationship with Him and with each other, while also dealing with the day-to-day money stuff that kept coming even as life gave us an essential assignment that consumed most of our daily focus and time.

I’m excited to share more about this and other critical ‘street-smart’ money strategies in the weeks and months ahead, including some live events in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver over the next few weeks and months!  My prayer in the meantime, is always for God’s blessings to grow and overflow in your life and I know He has good plans for you in the journey to financial grace!

Many blessings,

Sam
